Sending a Child Alone? How Unaccompanied Minor Flights Work

Updated June 25, 2026 | 4 min read

Children aged 5-12 can fly alone on Indian airlines with the Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) service. The airline assigns staff to escort them from gate to gate.

Age Rules

  • 👶 Under 5: Cannot fly alone on any airline
  • 🧒 5-12 years: Must use UMNR service (mandatory)
  • 🧑 12-18 years: Can fly alone without UMNR (but service available on request)

How It Works

  1. 📞 Book by phone: UMNR cannot be booked online — call the airline directly
  2. 📋 Fill forms: Parent/guardian details, receiver details, emergency contacts
  3. 🏢 At airport: Parent escorts child to airline counter, staff takes over
  4. ✈️ During flight: Cabin crew monitors the child throughout
  5. 🤝 At destination: Airline staff hands child to the designated receiver (ID required)

Fees

  • 💰 IndiGo: ₹3,000-₹4,500 per flight (on top of ticket)
  • 💰 Air India: ₹3,000-₹5,000 depending on route
  • ⚠️ Direct flights only: Most airlines don't allow UMNR on connecting flights
