Act fast. Report lost luggage at the airport before leaving. The sooner you file, the better your chances of recovery.
Step 1: Report at the Airport (Before Leaving)
- Go to the baggage claim counter in the arrivals area
- Show your baggage tag receipt (the sticker attached to your boarding pass at check-in)
- Fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR)
- Get a PIR reference number — keep this safe, you'll need it for tracking
- Ask for the airline's baggage service contact number
Step 2: Track Your Luggage
Most airlines use the WorldTracer system to track lost bags:
- Ask the airline for your WorldTracer reference number
- Track online at the airline's website using your PIR number
- Call the baggage service number for updates
Most "lost" bags are actually delayed — 97% of bags are found within 48 hours.
Step 3: Know Your Rights
Domestic Flights (DGCA Rules)
- Delayed baggage: Airline must deliver to your address once found
- Lost baggage (confirmed lost after 21 days): Compensation up to ₹20,000 for domestic flights
- Damaged baggage: Report within 7 days for compensation
International Flights (Montreal Convention)
- Maximum compensation: Up to 1,288 SDR (approximately ₹1,40,000)
- Report timeline: Within 7 days for damaged bags, 21 days for delayed bags
Step 4: File a Formal Complaint
If the airline doesn't resolve your case:
- Email the airline with your PIR number, flight details, and bag description
- File on AirSewa: Visit airsewa.gov.in or call 1800-11-4000
- Consumer forum: For unresolved cases, file with the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission
What to Include in Your Claim
- PIR reference number
- Flight ticket and boarding pass copy
- Baggage tag receipt
- Description of bag (color, brand, size, distinguishing features)
- List of contents and approximate value
- Receipts for any essential items you had to purchase
Tips to Prevent Lost Luggage
- Remove old tags: Old baggage tags can confuse the sorting system
- Use a distinctive bag: Add a colorful ribbon or unique tag
- Keep valuables in hand baggage: Never check important documents, medicine, or electronics
- Take a photo: Photograph your bag before check-in
- Arrive early: Late check-in increases the risk of bags being mishandled
- Get travel insurance: Good insurance covers lost baggage up to ₹50,000-₹1,00,000
